A few of my favourite things ....to do in the Gard

Where to start. If you're on holiday here in our gites you're going to need several weeks to take in all there is to do locally, but I have tried to distill it down to some of my personal highlights.

Pont du Gard

1. Walking - hike from the lovely Languedoc village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard to the ancient aqueduct. It's only an hour but the path takes you through olive groves and vines and through ancient woodland to the Pont du Gard itself. Along the way you'll find smaller, crumbling sections of the aqueduct. Marvel at the architecture, have lunch on the terrace below, take a dip and walk back via another pretty lane.

2. The Ardeche. Take your pick walk, cycle or canoe through the spectacular gorges of the Ardeche.

Labaume

Once you're done, finish at Labaume and enjoy lunch in one of the several restaurants dotting this pretty town.

3. Uzès .....Market Day. Not many markets in France can rival the Saturday market in medieval Uzès. It is vast. You can buy pretty much anything from sock to honey. The stalls are a feast for the senses. Its busy, be warned, but get there early, do your shopping and then relax with a coffee.

4.

Balade

Une balade dans les vignes. Most of the vineyards around the region offer a 'balade' at some point during the year. A walk through their vines, with a glass in hand. Find out about the grapes they grow, and how and savour a glass or two as you meander.

5. Explore the villages. We have been amazed at just how many lovely villages there are here. Drive into a village, head off the main street and you will inevitably find some cobbled byways, a picture perfect Mairie and stunning cottages. And probably a bar or cafe at least. Unlike some parts of France these villages are still lived in and vibrant - the numerous festivals in Summer testify to this. Try St Siffret, Aigueze , La Roque sur Cèze , Goudargues, Blauzac and Lussan of course, our own Plus Beaux Village.
